The artistic ceramic wall plate was made following the best Italian artisanal tradition. Entirely hand-decorated using the dry cord technique, the plate is a tribute to one of the most famous personalities of Italian television: Totò. The painting was made by Marta Liberati in occasion of the exhibition “Omaggio a Totò” – tribute to Totò – organized to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Prince De Curtis’ passing.
The famous Neapolitan actor, Antonio Clemente, was born in Naples in rione sanità in Santa Maria Antesaecula street on February 15th 1898. The exuberant Totò grew up in Naples’ streets preferring them to school but, above all, there was his passion for theatre, which was the main reason of him giving up school. His debut was between 1913 and 1914 in one of the many theatre of Naples, although for the first results he had to wait unitil 1922, when his family moved to Rome. Here started his rise to success even if his real acknowledge took place in Naples. In Italy, he is the symbol of comedy, nicknamed “the prince of smile” but he is also considered one of the best interpreters of dramatic roles in Italian cinema and theatre. He also distinguished himself outside of acting, leaving contributions as a playwright, poet, lyricist and singer. After living a life full of events, poverty and success, he passed out on April 15th 1967.
The travelling exhibit, after gaining extremely positive reviews from the public in different parts of Italy, stopped in Naples, homeland of the famous actor. Morte than 40 artist took part to the International Travelling Exhibit of Contemporary Art; among them, there were also Giuseppe and Lorenzo Liberati. The date of the last stop of the exhibition in Naples was the same day of the anniversary from the fiftieth anniversary of the actor’s death, on April 15, 2017. The art exhibition organization was curated by Master Enzo Angiuoni, the exhibition started from Milan about one year before arriving in Naples, Italy.
The careful details together with the touching colour matching, the pop-art styled colors and the polished stylisation of Totò’s portrait, make the dry cord ceramic plate a unique object with a high artistic depth.
