Raku ceramic vase, hammered
Raku ceramic cylindrical vase, hammered
The modern ceramic raku vase is moulded and decorated by hand by Master Giuseppe Liberati. The contemporary artefact is a unique piece, non reproducible. The making was entirely handmade using typical artistic craftsmanship methods, it is inspired by contemporary Italian ceramic main trends. The vase was moulded using the potter’s wheel, it has a cylindrical shape and is decorated with irregular hammer engravings all over its outer surface.
The particular and finished decoration chosen for the decoration is called “engraving” and is one of the most ancient techniques used to decorate ceramics. There are several engraving methods that can be performed using different tools depending on the object state, i.e. when the object is still in a plastic state, leather-hardness or already dried. For the vase final finishing was used the ancient Japanese cooking technique called “raku”, invented by an artisan called Chojiro. The main difference between majolica (traditional ceramic) and raku is that for the first one the object slowly cools down, while for the second one the object is extracted by the oven still incandescent. Therefore, the oxygen reduction and the thermic shock allow to obtain, sometimes, unpredictable and unique chromatic effects with particular shades.
The final effect depends on several factors, the most important are those regarding the choice and the treatment of the material in order to make unique pieces with a great artistic depth. Moreover, are also important the mixture, the type and the exact composition of glazes and colours. To highlight every engraving on the raku ceramic vase, some contrasting colours were applied on purpose: light glaze for the background and dark shades for the engravings.
The vase outer surface is irregular with engravings and embosses and the vitrification of the glaze during the cooking phase made the surface waterproof, therefore the vase is suitable to contain liquids. The cylindrical, raku ceramic vase with its uniform coloration and bold decoration is a decor element suitable to different furnishing styles. When purchasing the object, a Guarantee Certificate will be attached to prove the craftsmanship of the work.
